Bastianelli's pin leads Brown over Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Nino Bastianelli tallied his third pin of the season to propel Brown University wrestling to a 19-18 win over Harvard University in a tiebreaker on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

In their home and Ivy finale, the Bears (3-8, 3-7 EIWA, 1-4 Ivy) never trailed in the match and held a lead as large as eight points at 18-10 on their way to the win over the visiting Crimson (3-10, 3-7 EIWA, 1-4 Ivy) on tiebreaker criterion 3.21.B (greater number of falls, forfeits, defaults, and disqualifications).

"All 10 of our guys competed hard today, and we needed all of them to get the win," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "Everyone made contributions at key moments against a very tough Harvard team. It's great to be able to close out our home schedule with an Ivy win."

Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) notched his 16th win of the season and his first-period fall at 197 pounds proved the difference in the contest.

Seniors Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) and Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.), sophomore Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.), and freshman Ricky Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) all earned wins via decisions. Cabanillas tallied his team-high 21st win of the season, Pawelski notched his 14th win of the year – and fifth straight victory – and Keeley charted his 11th win of the year.

Opening the dual at 174 pounds, Wilson registered a 4-2 win over Peter Ferraro. After Ferraro started the scoring with a takedown, Wilson shut him out the rest of the way, scoring an escape in the first, reversal in the second, and a point for riding time.

Bastianelli recorded the Bears' next win, topping Evan Callahan with a fall in 1:17 at 197 pounds, giving Brown a 9-3 edge in the team score.

At 125 pounds, Keeley kept Brown up 12-7 in the team score behind a 4-1 win over Beau Bayless. Keeley notched a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second stanza en route to the win.

After Harvard pulled within 12-10, Pawelski and Cabanillas earned back-to-back victories to extend Brown's lead to 18-10.

Pawelski tallied a 4-0 shutout win at 141 pounds over Lukus Stricker with a takedown in the first, escape in the second, and point for riding time. Cabanillas followed with an 8-4 victory over Zeth Dean at 149 pounds, scoring a takedown in the first, reversal in the second, and four points in the third.

Two Bears pushed their opponents to sudden victory before dropping decisions. Sophomore Brandon Kui (Wayne, N.J.) fell 3-1 at 184 pounds to Michael Doggett while junior Charlie Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) fell 15-12 to Michael Jaffe at 133 pounds.

Next, Brown concludes its regular season at Sacred Heart tomorrow – Sunday, Feb. 23 – at 4:30 p.m. before competing at the EIWA Championships from March 6-7.
