    Augustana (S.D.) handles U-Mary in NSIC opener

    SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- On the back of two pins, Augustana opened the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual season with a 38-6 win over the University of Mary. The Vikings were spotted a big lead with U-Mary having open spots at the 197- and 285-pound weight classes and took six of the other eight bouts.

    Augustana (5-2, 1-0 NSIC) tallied eight two-point near falls and recorded two major decisions in their conference opener. The Vikings allowed just three takedowns an scored 19 of their own to pave the way to vitory.

    Once again, TJ North started the Vikings off with a major decision win, taking down Hunter Menendez 15-3 in the 125-pound bout. North held a 5-0 advantage after two periods and used four takedowns in the final period to win 15-3.

    Blake Jans (33 pounds) raced out to a 6-0 lead after the first minute and eventually broke through with a pin at 2:27 to put the Vikings up 10-0 after two bouts. Jacob Anderson (141 pounds) and Alec Lindsay traded second-period reversals for a 2-2 tie entering the third period. Anderson scored on a takedown and reversal in the third period and won 9-5.

    In the bout of the night, Shawn Hatlestad was matched up with Trevor Johnson who was ranked seventh nationally at 149 pounds. Both wrestlers earned a point with escapes after electing to start the second and third period on bottom, but Johnson scored a third-period takedown and Hatlestad couldn't score after he escaped and lost 3-2.

    Bradyn Neises gave the Vikings a 17-3 lead entering intermission with a 17-7 major decision win at 157 pounds. Neises scored nine points in the final period, using four takedowns to earn his first major decision of the year.

    Matched up a 165 pounds Parker Swanson battled regionally-ranked Brock Krumm, but couldn't break through, losing a 7-5 decision. Swanson was down 4-1 after the first period and trailed 5-3 after two periods, but Krumm prevailed to draw the Marauders three points closer at 17-6.

    Tim Weber and John DeVito were deadlocked at 1-1 after three periods after each wrestler scored on an escape in the 174-pound bout. Early in overtime, Weber scored on a takedown while barely staying in the circle and won 3-1, putting the Vikings up 20-6.

    Sean Derry capped off Augustana's big win with a pin of U-Mary's Riley Nagel just over 30 seconds into the second period. Derry held a 6-2 lead after the opening period and finished Nagel with his third pin of the season.

    Jayd Docken (197 pounds) and Michael Lowman (285 pounds) won by forfeit to give Augustana a 38-6 win.

    The Vikings are now idle until Jan. 4, when they host Concordia-Moorhead at the Elmen Center at 7 p.m.
