ASU downs Oklahoma in Virginia Duals quarterfinals

HAMPTON, Va. -- No. 9 Arizona State Wrestling won six matches, including three by bonus points, cruising to a 25-12 victory over Oklahoma to open the 2019 Virginia Duals.

The early second half of the Sun Devils' lineup proved to be the difference maker, clinching the match for ASU as they tacked on 10 team points in two bouts. No. 5 Josh Shields (165) and No. 2 Zahid Valencia (174) cruised to back-to-back tech falls as Shields built up over 3:30 riding time in a 5:37 bout and Valencia over 2:30 in a 4:51 bout.

No. 20 Josiah Kline (133) found himself down early, 2-0, before evening the score on a takedown of his own and then, very quickly, got the fall to give ASU an early 9-0 lead after a Brandon Courtney decision at 125 lbs.

A back-and-forth match with three lead changes at 149 lbs., Josh Maruca broke the 4-4 tie with less than 45 seconds remaining and, despite a Davion Jeffries escape with two seconds remaining, Maruca pulled out a 6-5 decision.

Brady Daniel capped the match on a high note with a 3-1 win in the first sudden victory period, scoring a takedown at the edge of the circle.

    Oklahoma earned wins at 141, 157, 184, and 197.

After Virginia upset No. 20 Lock Haven Friday morning, the Sun Devils will face Virginia in the Virginia Duals semifinals Saturday at 2 pm ET/12 noon MT. The winner will advance to the championship Saturday at 8:30 pm ET/6:30 pm MT as ASU looks to defend their 2018 title. All matches of the dual tournament (for a fee) are streamed with live scoring (free) on Trackwrestling.com.
