Army wins New York state title

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Patrick Simpson and Jon Anderson each won an individual title to lead Army's wrestling team to its third straight team crown at the 37th annual New York State Championships at Oswego State University's Max Ziel Gymnasium Saturday evening. The Black Knights racked up 152 points, and outdistanced the field by 17.5 markers.

Simpson, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., completed his dominant run through the 149-pound bracket with a pair of overwhelming victories. The team captain, who was the top seed at 149 pounds, earned a 19-4 technical fall over Nassau's Frank Meringelo in the semifinals, before scoring a 13-2 major decision triumph versus second-seeded Pat Lloyd of Buffalo in the championship final.

Simpson, who cashed in a pin and a technical fall during yesterday's action, is a team-best 21-5 on the season. His victory over Lloyd–the 75th of his career—gave Simpson his second straight individual title at the New York States, after winning the 141-pound championship as a junior last year. Simpson was recognized as the tournament's "Outstanding Wrestler" following his superb two-day effort.

Anderson, a senior who hails from Virginia Beach, Va., pinned Cornell's David Post in 2 minutes, 9 seconds in his first match of the day. The four-year performer then finished his championship run with a 6-5 decision over Columbia's Dustin Tillman in the finals. Anderson, who authored a perfect 3-0 mark this weekend, is a sterling 15-3 on the season.

William Simpson, Frank Baughan, Brian Rowan and Charles Martin all chipped in with runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes.

Simpson, an up-and-coming freshman 125-pounder, upset second-seeded Jon Spinner of Oswego with a 6-1 decision to reach the championship final, before dropping a tough 6-2 decision to top-seeded Jeff Sato of Columbia in the final bout.

Baughan qualified for the title bout at 133 pounds with a 14-1 major decision over Joe Jewett of Oswego. In the final match, the Army junior fell to Buffalo's Mark Budd, 8-7.

Rowan, the No. 4 seed in the 157-pound draw, upset top-seeded John Cummings of Buffalo, 8-2, to reach the finals, where his run was halted by third-seeded Jad Duca of Ithaca, 5-2.

Martin finished runner-up at 197 pounds. The senior downed RIT's Zach Greenberg, 3-1, in his first bout of the day, before falling to Kyle Cerminara of Buffalo, 14-5, in the championship match.

Elsewhere, freshman Michael Sprigg, who was the No. 4 seed in the heavyweight draw, placed third by defeating third-seeded Arkadiy Levitin of Hunter, 5-3, in the consolation final. Sprigg has won five of his last six bouts and stands at 11-9 on the season.

Army head coach Chuck Barbee was pleased with his team's effort throughout the weekend.

"I thought our guys competed hard for two straight days," commented the Black Knight mentor. "We fought all weekend long, and we got a couple of outstanding performances out of Patrick Simpson and Jon Anderson. It was a solid team effort all the way around with two champions and four guys placing runner-up."
