"I thought overall the team wrestled well, they were prepared and I'm proud of these guys," assistant coach Lee Pritts said. "This was a great test by a talented and well coached Oklahoma team. Looking ahead it's going to get tougher so we have to continue to climb, continue to elevate, continue to fight."
Arizona native Brandon Courtney (125) was able to slam in a major decision victory to begin the night for the Sun Devils. Following Courtney, transfer Michal McGee (133) dominated No. 10 Anthony Madrigal as he gave no opportunities for the Sooner and claimed the win 13-3.
Following the back-to-back bonus points for the Maroon and Gold, the Sooners were able to break down the 8-0 lead with three consecutive wins in 141, 149 and 157.
After the five minute intermission, No. 5 Anthony Valencia (165) placed the Sun Devils back on top 11-9 with his 3-1 decision victory over Jake Stiles.
The upset of the night came at 174 with redshirt freshman Trey Munoz claiming his first victory in a Sun Devil singlet with a 8-3 decision over No. 8 Anthony Mantanona. Munoz dominated Mantanona earning two takedowns and a 3:17 riding time bonus point in his debut.
"This win was important to him and he prepares for excellence daily," Pritts said. "He expected himself to win. After weigh-ins he said to head coach Zeke Jones 'Let's start at 174, I'm ready to go!' and that hunger to compete is special."
Again, the Sooners would follow up with another win to keep themselves alive and within a two point reach of the Sun Devils (14-12).
Norfleet and Woodley battled for the first three minute period, remaining scoreless until the Chicago native claimed the first point of the match with an escape in the beginning of the second period. The two would switch earning escape points on each other before ending in the second tie breaker period with Norfleet claiming the riding time point to give him the advantage he needed to win 4-3.
At heavyweight, redshirt freshman Cohlton Schultz won in a 3-2 decision over Sooner Josh Heindselman to add the final team points to the Sun Devil score to beat Oklahoma 20-12 for the first time in Norman since 2012.
With the individual matches in play for the NCAA Tournament, McGee, Valencia, Norfleet and Schultz are all 3-0, while Courtney is 4-0.
Redshirt freshman Julian Chlebove made his debut as a Sun Devil with a 3-2 decision victory over Zack Zeamer in 141. True freshman Jesse Vasquez claimed his second win of the season in a 7-5 sudden victory over Cam Picklo.
