Arizona State pins down Fresno State, 46-9

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Bonus point victories was the name of the game in Glendale, Ariz., Friday night as the No. 12 Arizona State University wrestling team dominated visiting Fresno State, 46-9, inside Raymond Kellis High School on the strength of eight victories earning more than three team points. The victory moved the Sun Devils to 13-7 overall on the season while pushing the Bulldogs to 4-8.

Of the 10 bouts scheduled for the evening, only seven were contested as ASU surrendered one bout by forfeit while FSU gave up two. In those seven contests, however, the near capacity gymnasium on the RKHS campus had plenty to cheer for right from the start.

Following the Bulldogs taking a 6-0 team lead when Corey Borges won by forfeit at 125, John Espinoza (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) took to the mat at 133 for just his second bout of the season and got the crowd on its feet when he pinned Sean Carlson at 4:12. After Adam Hickey (So., Mayfield, Ohio) won by forfeit at 141, the Sun Devils held a 12-6 lead that would only grow as the dual continued.

Pat Payne (So., Poway, Calif.) dominated Garrett Spooner at 149 as the Sun Devil nearly pinned his foe on several occasions before winning by technical fall with a 17-0 score. Brian Stith (Jr., Hampton, Va.), the No. 9 wrestler at 157, took to the mat before leaving 1:57 later with a pin of Dustin Rocha. The Sun Devils then secured their third fall of the dual as No. 11 Patrick Pitsch (So., Spanaway, Wash.) took his opponent, Darrell Goodpaster, to his back with six seconds remaining in the second period to win by fall at 4:54.

After ASU's Alex Pavlenko (Fr., Mesa, Ariz.) won by forfeit at 174, the Sun Devils held a 35-6 lead and were looking for more points with three bouts remaining. But, at 184, Bulldog Greg Gifford hung tough and took No. 9 C.B. Dollaway (Sr., Mt. Gilead, Ohio) to the one minute sudden victory period where he won the bout with a takedown.

Despite the loss at 184, the remaining two bouts easily went in favor of the Sun Devils as No. 10 Ryan Bader (Sr., Reno, Nev.) needed 2:04 to pin Miguel Rodriguez at 197 before No. 4 Cain Velasquez (Sr., Yuma, Ariz.) scored a 23-8 technical fall over Wade Sauer at heavyweight.

Sunday will mark the final dual of the 2005-06 season when the Sun Devils meet Stanford inside Wells Fargo Arena at 2 p.m. The team's five seniors will be honored prior to the dual while the program's alumni will be honored at the mid-way point of the Pac-10 meeting.
