This marks the second time in program history that ASU (4-4 duals) finished seventh at the VA Duals (last in 1987) and the sixth overall time in the Top 8. All time, the Sun Devils are 22-20-3 in the competition.
In Saturday’s matches, the Sun Devils defeated Old Dominion, 21-15, then fell to Rider, 25-11. In the seventh-place match, ASU stormed out to a 32-6 victory over Nebraska-Kearney.
Joel Smith (157) was the lone Sun Devil to go undefeated on the day, defeating ODU’s Tristan Warner in a pin in 1:30 before he went on to pick up an 8-5 decision over Rider’s Wayne Stinson. Finally, Smith Nebraska-Kearney’s Colton Johnson in a 37-second pin.
With today’s pins, Smith now owns the team’s top three fastest falls so far this season, totaling six overall and four in the top-10 by time. He picked up the fastest, a pin in 18 seconds at the Cowboy Open on Nov. 2.
Ares Carpio also picked up a pin in 4:54 in his win over ODU’s Brandon Jeske at 125 pounds.
On the day, the Sun Devils picked up eight bonus-point wins, including four in the match against Nebraska-Kearney (Goodsite-Major; Kraus-Major; Smith-Fall; Bean-Forf).
Up next, ASU wrestling will open the 2014 home slate of six-consecutive matches, hosting Northern Colorado and Utah Valley on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Wells Fargo Arena. The first match of the day is set for a Noon MT start, with the second to follow.
