The dual began at 165 pounds, where sophomore Bret Baumbach gave Stanford the early 3-0 lead in the bout. Baumbach, facing Cal Poly freshman Paul Woodman, recorded a 6-0 decision with two takedowns, an escape and 2:09 in riding time.
Highlighting the dual was a top-5 match-up at 174 pounds between Stanford senior Nick Amuchastegui, ranked No. 1 in the nation, and Cal Poly senior Ryan DesRoches, ranked No. 4. The Cardinal senior dominated the bout, registering an 8-0 major decision to improve to 14-0 on the year. Amuchastegui tallied three takedowns, an escape and 3:42 of riding time in the win. Handing DesRoches his first loss of the year, he is now 11-0 in duals this season.
Stanford junior Spence Patrick added to the Cardinal lead as he posted a 5-4 overtime decision over Sean Dougherty at 184 pounds. Tied 2-2 after the second period as both wrestlers registered reversals, Dougherty scored with an escape in the third, but Patrick had secured 1:38 in riding time to force overtime. No points were scored in the first overtime minute. Patrick chose down to start the second overtime period and registered a reversal to go up by two points. In the third overtime, Dougherty cut the score to one with an escape, but Patrick held on for the victory. He is now 12-9 overall and 8-3 in duals this season.
Cal Poly scored its first dual points at 197 pounds to cut the Stanford lead to 10-4. Senior Ryan Smith posted a 17-5 major decision over Stanford sophomore Alan Yen. Yen is now 5-5 in duals this season and 7-11 overall.
The Cardinal answered at heavyweight as Dan Scherer recorded a 3-1 decision in overtime. With each wrestler scoring an escape in regulation, Scherer scored a takedown as time ran out in the first overtime period to seal the win. The sophomore improves to 16-8 overall and 9-2 in duals this season.
A forfeit by the Cardinal at 125 pounds brought the dual score to 13-10 in favor of Stanford. Junior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 9 nationally, pushed the Cardinal lead back up to nine with a fall in 1:37 over Cal Poly's Jake Tanenbaum. It marked the fifth fall of the season for Mango, which leads the team, as he moved to 20-5 overall. He is also 11-0 in duals this season.
After Stanford junior Timmy Boone fell to Cal Poly sophomore Kyle Chene, 2-1, at 149 pounds, the dual came down to the 157 pound matchup between Cardinal sophomore Garrett Schaner and Cal Poly rookie Gianpier Yanez. Schaner came through for Stanford with a 10-1 major decision to win the dual. The sophomore is now 6-8 overall and 3-4 in duals.
Next on the slate for the Cardinal is a dual at San Francisco State on Friday, Jan. 20. Stanford will then play host to Southern Oregon on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Burnham Pavilion.
