American picks up tight win at Binghamton

The No. 11 American University wrestling team recorded six decisions on Friday night en route to an 18-15 dual meet victory at Binghamton.

The match was tight through all 10 bouts as neither side held more than a three-point team advantage the entire night. American (5-6) captured three of the last four bouts, which included an 8-1 decision by No. 1 heavyweight Ryan Flores to break a 15-15 team tie and give the Eagles the victory.

American and Binghamton (12-4) split the opening four bouts with two decisions going each way as the score was tied at six. AU's Thomas Williams earned a 5-3 decision at 125 lbs. to begin the night and No. 15 Matt Mariacher tallied a 9-3 decision at 141 lbs. American's Corey Borshoff dropped a 13-6 decision to Binghamton's Patrick Hunter at 133 lbs. and AU's Kevin Tao fought hard but came up on the short end of a 7-1 final to No. 4 Donald Vinson at 149 lbs.

The bout at 157 lbs. was highly anticipated as it featured two top-10 wrestlers -- No. 3 Ganbayar Sanjaa of American and Binghamton's Justin Lister, the No. 10-ranked wrestler. Sanjaa earned a late first-period takedown to take a 3-2 advantage but Lister recorded an escape and tied the bout at three heading to the third. Sanjaa tallied a third-period takedown and held on for the 5-3 decision to give AU a 9-6 team lead at the midway point of the match.

Following a Binghamton major decision at 165 lbs. to take a 10-9 team lead, Phillip Barreiro picked up a key American win at 174 lbs. with a 12-6 decision against Celeb Wallace. Barreiro fell behind early, but rallied with a big third-period to earn the win and put the Eagles back in front, 12-10 through seven bouts. The Bearcats, however, bounced right back with a strong performance at 184 lbs. by No. 20 Nathan Schiedel, who earned a 22-7 technical fall over AU's Thomas Barreiro.

Facing a 15-12 deficit with two bouts remaining, No. 19 Daniel Mitchell took care of Binghamton's Cody Reed at 197 lbs., 5-3. Mitchell fell behind 3-1 early in the bout, but responded with four straight points to close out the bout and tie the team score at 15.

In the final bout of the night, Flores had his way with No. 19 Nick Gwiazdowski, registering a 8-1 decision to give American the team victory. Flores took a 2-0 lead after one period with a takedown and extended the advantage to 5-0 following two with an escape and another takedown. Flores began the third period with a takedown and Gwiazdowski picked up his lone point on an escape. With riding time, Flores recorded the seven-point win, extending his record to 9-0 this season.

The dual win for the Eagles is their fifth of the season as they improve their road record to 4-1 on the campaign. Binghamton is the third opponent that AU has defeated this season that was ranked in a major national poll at the time. The Bearcats are currently No. 18 in the NWCA/USA Today poll.

AU will look to continue its road success when it travels to fellow EIWA school Bucknell this Sunday, February 5. The action from Lewisburg, Pa., will get underway at 12 p.m.
