Szymanski opened the dual with an 8-0 major over Landon LoAlbo at 125 pounds. The win was Szymanski's first major of the year and snapped a five-match losing streak for the Shoreham, New York, sophomore.
After Philip Anderson topped Nicholas Lirette at 133, seventh-ranked Ward put an exclamation point on his regular season with a first-period pin of Dallas Roemer. Ward struck quickly in the opening stanza and put Roemer on his back just 2:03 into the bout to push the Carolina lead to 10-3 in the dual. The Cincinnati, Ohio, All-American is now 23-4 on the year with nine bonus-point wins.
Troy Heilmann won his fourth straight bout at 149 with a 10-4 decision over Joby Armenta.
Gardner-Webb (5-9) pulled within two points in the overall score with wins at 157 and 165, including a tech fall from Tyler Marinelli at 165. But No. 6 Ethan Ramos stopped the bleeding with a 4-2 win over Austin Trott at 174 to keep Carolina (8-6) in front.
Hunter Gamble gave the Runnin' Bulldogs late life with a major at 184, but Chaid returned the favor with a 17-7 win over Kyle Ash at 197. Cory Daniel then iced the dual with a 5-2 decision at heavyweight to give the Tar Heels a win in their final competiton of the regular season.
UNC is off until Saturday, March 4, when the Tar Heels travel to Raleigh for the 2017 ACC Championships.
