    North Carolina rallies past Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Evan Henderson's eighth pin of the year and technical falls from Joey Ward and John Michael Staudenmayer powered No. 14 North Carolina to a 27-20 win at No. 18 Virginia Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. Nine of the 10 matches were won with bonus points in an action-packed dual that saw the Tar Heels get their first ACC win of the year and beat the Cavaliers for the second year in a row.

Virginia (6-5, 1-3 ACC) raced out to a 12-0 lead thanks to consecutive pins and 125 and 133 pounds. Nick Herrmann stuck Anthony Bosco with 1:02 left in the second period before No. 6 George DiCamillo scored a first-period fall against James Szymanski.

Carolina (10-3, 1-2 ACC) started the comeback immediately, with No. 11 Ward putting together a dominant performance at 141. The redshirt junior from Cincinnati scored early and often against Zachary Watson before the match was stopped with four seconds left in the first period and Ward up 16-0.

No. 6 Henderson did Ward one better by planting Christopher Yankowich after 2:25 for his eighth pin of the year. The two-time All-American now has 44 career pins, just six shy of the school career record of 50 set by three-time NCAA champ T.J. Jaworsky.

Andrew Atkinson briefly slowed the UNC momentum with a major decision at 157 before No. 10 Staudenmayer evened the dual at 165. Staudenmayer took control of the match early and led 14-0 after one period and finished the tech fall 1:21 into the second to tie the team score at 16.

No. 2 Ramos blanked Tyler Askey 12-0 for a major decision that gave the Tar Heels their first lead of the day at 20-16. The redshirt sophomore improved to a team-best 16-2 on the year and 12-1 in dual competition.

Redshirt senior No. 19 Alex Utley put Carolina in great shape with his major decision over Will Schany at 184 before Chip Ness sealed the victory. Trailing 5-4 with less than 20 seconds left in a back-and-forth match with Virginia's No. 10 Zachary Nye at 197, Ness scored a takedown and rode out the win.

Patrick Gillen finished the dual with an 11-2 major decision over Cory Daniel at heavyweight to make it nine of 10 bouts decided with bonus points.

Carolina returns to Chapel Hill for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 10. The Tar Heels face Navy at 5 p.m. before hosting Duke at 7.
