NC State defeats Kent State, Gwiz sets school record

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Backed by four bonus point wins, including two pins, the NC State wrestling team defeated visiting Kent State 26-13 Saturday afternoon in Reynolds Coliseum. Redshirt-junior Nick Gwiazdowski set a new school record with his 42nd straight victory, and his pin at 285 pounds clinched the dual for the Wolfpack (12-4).

The dual started at 133 with a Kent State win. The Pack then won back-to-back bouts, #23 Sam Speno defeated #29 Tyler Small 6-5 at 141, then redshirt-freshman Beau Donahue recorded his second career pin to push the Pack's lead to 9-4 after three matches.

Kent State came back with their own back-to-back wins at 157 and 165 pounds to retake the lead at 10-9.

NC State closed out the dual win by winning four of the final five matches. #17 Pete Renda scored a 12-1 major decision at 174 followed by freshman Nicky Hall's 9-5 win at 184 pounds.

Gwiazdowski's school record 42nd straight win came in style, as he pinned #30 Mimmo Lytle in the second period to clinch the dual with the Pack up 22-13 going into the final bout. Redshirt-senior Joe DeAngelo closed it out strong with a 15-3 major decision.

From the locker room: "I'm very happy with the outcome today. We showed great intensity, and the work we have done in practice is starting to show during our matches. Nick's accomplishment is very impressive. To get that many straight wins at this level means he is on his A-game each time out which is very difficult to do." - head coach Pat Popolizio

Up Next: The Pack will be in road action for the next three duals, starting with a trip to ACC rival North Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Eddie Smith Field House.
